Balance Due came about from a piece I had done for the show Passage at Maudslay State Park in Newburyport, MA called What the Merrimac Brings Back. These pieces are a nod to Newburyport’s shipbuilding and trade history from the 1800’s. My great, great grandfather was a Supercargo which is a person employed on board a vessel by the owner of the cargo on the ship. His job was to procure items at each port of call. The colors I use in these pieces reference those items and goods imported, like indigo, hemp or jute, and saltpetre, also known as Potassium Nitrate.
