Helen’s Hellions

Hand screen printed Evolon, a microfilament textile
2019

Exhibited as Riding Through the Trails for 20/20, Maudslay State Park, Newburyport, MA 2019 and as Helen’s Hellions, for The Chemistry of Fiberlab, Lexington Arts & Crafts Society, Lexington, MA, 2021

Working from family photos and diaries, I addressed the theme of 20/20 by focusing on my great grandmother at the turn of the 20th century. The garment is a construction of a riding habit for side saddle horseback riding. The piece combines screen printing with machine and hand embroidery and it was a collaboration with Diadem Washburn who did the construction and Catelyn Johnson who did the machine embroidery while I did the hand embroidery and appliqué.
